The Interview Itself

Once you are in the interview room sit down where the interview advices you to sit and remember your body language. Do not cross your legs or arms, keep an opened body language by keeping your feet and knees together and your hands resting on the armchair or on your lap.

Then most interviews are broke up into four sections: the introduction, employer sell, candidate sell and the close.

The introduction will consist of the interviewer making you feel at ease and creating a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. They might just ask if you got there okay or something about the weather. Just reply positively even if you did have problems getting there and with a friendly smile.

Then the interviewer will go on to sell the company and the job that you are applying for. Make sure at this stage that you make eye contact and listen to everything that he/she is saying because they may ask you something about what they were talking about.

Now it is your turn to sell yourself. The interviewer will ask numerous questions on your qualifications, work experience and anything else that they feel is relevant.

Therefore it is vital that you remember the following:

  • Make frequent eye contact, do not stare down when answering questions
  • Remember your body language. Do not fidget, sit still and use opened body language
  • Take your time and be concise when answering questions. It is perfectly fine to take a moment and think before you answer a question.
  • Use specific examples when talking about strengths, weaknesses or teamwork
  • Think about what language you use. For example, try to "yes" instead of "yeah"
  • Try not to interrupt or contradict the interviewer
  • Never say anything bad about a previous employer
  • Answer the question that is actually asked, if you are not sure then ask for clarification
  • Do not lie about any aspects of your education or work experience
  • Always ask your own questions at the end of the interview.
  • Always find out what will happen after the interview, e.g. when will they contact you.

Then the interview will come to a close. Make sure at the close that you thank the interviewer for their time and shake their hand.
