Stress Interviewing
This is when the employer uses a number of interviewers and tries to intimidate the candidate. An employer may also use one interviewer who deliberately acts in an uninterested manner. For example, not making eye contact or ask questions in a demeaning way. The purpose of this is to ascertain how the candidate reacts in a stressful situation. This technique tends to provoke negative emotions so it is vital that the candidate realizes this and does not take the interviewer's actions personally because they are only acting.
Examples of stress questions are:
- Sticky Situation - "If you caught a colleague stealing money what would you do?"
- Putting you on the Spot - "How do you think this interview is going?"
- Popping the Balloon - (deep sighing and shaking head) "Well if thats the best answer you can give... Okay well what about..."
- Oddball question "What would you change about the design of a badminton racket?"
- Doubting your Veracity - "I do not feel we are getting to the heart of the question here so lets start again. What really do think about...?"
